Remember the True Enemy

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” -Ephesians 6:10-12

Many Christians are prepared for a potluck lunch, but few are armed for total warfare. Today’s Church focuses more on song preferences and parking places than on a pitched battle with the enemy. We are standing in the middle of a war zone and yet many are oblivious to enemy fire until it takes them down.

We ought never to forget that other people are not our enemy, regardless of their political or social agenda. Social media sites are filled with Christian rants against political leaders, liberal social activists, and immoral celebrities. But they are not our enemy. They are victims.

Our true enemy is far more sinister. He hates us with an unrelenting, scheming, unquenchable anger. He delights in our destruction. He has no compassion for our tribulations. We are foolish to let our guard down or treat him lightly, even for a moment. Too many Christians have had their light snuffed out and their witness discredited because they were careless in the battle.

Many people today comment on the deterioration of American society. They bemoan the fact that many people have abandoned traditional values and left the church. Yet these trends are merely symptoms of the true problem.

The real issue is that we are engaged in a cosmic spiritual warfare. The enemy is fully aware of the stakes, and he is determined to produce maximum destruction.

Arm yourself with spiritual armor. In these challenging days, may you truly be strong in the Lord.
